Kenya has presented the candidature of Amb. (Dr.) Amina C. Mohammed, E.G.H., CAV, for the post of Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Ambassador Mohamed has served Kenya and the international community with distinction for more than 30 years and has held senior positions both at home and in international institutions. Ambassador Mohamed has made exceptional contributions to international trade governance, for instance, chairing the first WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Africa and steering the meeting to successful conclusion.

The Ambassador understands the WTO and its processes having chaired all high-level decision-making bodies, among them, the Ministerial Conference, General Council, Dispute Settlement Body and the Trade Policy Review Body. She has the vision and capacity to unite all WTO members in pursuit of their common interest. Amina is uniquely qualified to lead the WTO at this critical time.

Ambassador Mohamed is currently the Minister for Sports, Culture and Heritage. She has served in other Ministerial portfolios which include Foreign Affairs and International Trade (2013-2017) and Education, Science, technology and Innovation (2018-2019). Amina is the current President of the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). She is the former Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
